Advice and laying instructions for stone facings

CHECK THE BACKING SUPPORTS:
The supports on which the stone facing is to be glued must be solid, dry, clean, free of dust, oil or fat, old paint and any other substance that could affect its adherence. If in doubt, attach the metal grid ZINCORETE 2,5 to the wall using the expansion fixings and smooth a thin layer of special B&B glue.

WEATHER:
Do not use the glue if the temperature is near zero or if the forecast is for frost on the days immediately after the gluing. Do not use the product on a wet backing support or if rain is forecast.

APPLICATIONS:
It is possible to apply the B&B stone facings also on special backing support such as wood, metal, insulating materials, plasterboard, ventilated walls, etc. We suggest you to contact the B&B technical office to develop these kinds of projects. All the stones placed with the “random mix” pattern can be laid dry or with joints. During the packaging, we always consider a 20 mm joint. Therefore, in case of dry laying, about the 15% more of material is needed.

COVERING AGAINST WATER INFILTRATIONS: It is necessary to prevent rainwater infiltrations between the facing and the supporting wall. Therefore you should always provide for a covering with a roof, flashings, metal sheet brims or slabs.

Laying instructions for bricks and brick-slip

B&B facing bricks and brick-slips are natural products and therefore the raw materials and firing process can affect them.

This creates different shades in the colours of the finished bricks and brick-slips. In order to achieve a pleasant result, you need to follow some practical instructions: before you start, make sure that the correct amount of material required to complete the work is already on the site. Starting from one edge, take the bricks or brick-slips from at least 3 different packs at the same time and continue vertically.

A correct mixture allows you to build a wall where the slight differences in shades of colour blend in evenly all over the wall. This gives a very pleasant result to the wall. (fig. B) Never use sponges or wet tools, especially while laying the brick-slips. Clean them by using a dry brush gently.

ADVICE
Piles of bricks and brick-slips should always be raised above the ground to prevent them from getting dirty and the top of the pile should be covered by a plastic sheet. (fig. A)

LAYING OF FACING BRICK-SLIPS

  1.  Remove the plaster that has deteriorated and tap the wall with a hammer.
  2. Smooth a layer, at least 6 mm thick, of anti-slip glue with a notched trowel.
  3. Lay the brick-slips.
  4. Fill the joint up with B&B stucco using the special filler bag.
  5. Smooth and press down the stucco using the correct tool.
  6. Brush and remove any residual stucco without using any water.

Installation Products

B&B SPECIAL GLUE

We always recommend using B&B Special Glue. The glue must ALWAYS be applied using the double-bond method, meaning both the wall surface and the back of the stone element must be coated. Using a notched trowel, apply the adhesive with horizontal and vertical strokes. Work in small wall sections to prevent the adhesive from drying and forming a skin. Spread the adhesive on the back of the stone, and press it firmly against the wall for proper adhesion.

B&B STUCCO

Certified efflorescence-free, this grout is specifically formulated for use with B&B coverings and is available in 5 colour options. The coarse texture, achieved by blending selected inert sands, gives the joints a refined “aged” look. Ideal for facing bricks, slips, natural and reconstituted stone. Packaging: 25 Kg bag.

B&B Joint Filler Bag

For perfect application, use the exclusive B&B Joint Filler Bag.

DRYSYSTEM

We recommend using DRYSYSTEM to:

  • Ensure maximum breathability of the wall and allow proper drainage of any internal condensation.
  • Provide optimal performance in cases of cladding over non-waterproofed retaining walls.
  • Solve rising damp issues, protecting the wall structure and surface finish.
